Lighting Pakistan to Use Satellite Imagery to Identify Off-grid Communities

The International Finance Corporation’s Lighting Pakistan program recently launched a
Geographic Information System (GIS) project with the objective of identifying un-electrified
communities across the provinces of Punjab and Sindh.

Despite an estimated 60 million Pakistanis living off-grid, a key challenge faced by many
Lighting Pakistan associates is finding clusters of off-grid communities in need of sustainable
energy solutions. This project will assist IFC’s Lighting Pakistan associates efficiently reach off-
grid population centers in the two provinces, reducing expansion time and costs.

It will build upon the approach used in the project “Using Satellite Imagery to Monitor Progress
of Rural Electrification Methodology Validation in South and East Asia Regions” – an initiative of
the World Bank’s Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP).

A dataset composed of 30,000 medium resolution nighttime satellite images captured since
1992 will be processed and analyzed to achieve the objectives of Lighting Pakistan’s latest
project.
